Speaker F: It's been out for over a year and the hype seems stronger than ever. Speaker F: Is it still the king of pocket cameras in 2025? Speaker F: Let's see what the reviewers have to say. Speaker A: It seems everyone has got one of these and they're using it to film all of their social media content instead of a mirrorless camera.
0:30 Speaker A: But why is that? Speaker A: Well, let's find out, shall we? Speaker G: About six months ago, I started noticing more and more creators using this little guy not just as a basic action camera, but as a legit tool for high quality content creation. Speaker C: There's a lot of people in our audience that often ask, should I pick up the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 in 2024? Speaker C: Or should I go with something more like a pocket mirrorless style camera, a point and shoot camera, or even an action camera for their vlogging needs?
0:56 Speaker A: But what it does do perfectly is fit that gap in the market for both beginners and professionals. Speaker A: If you're a begin beginner who's just coming from a smartphone, this is a massive step up and it will allow you to take your videography more seriously. Speaker A: And if you're a professional who's looking for a B cam or a travel cam that you want something to be a bit more light, a bit more portable and discreet in some cases, this is a great option. Speaker F: A huge part of that broad appeal comes down to its core design philosophy, portability.
1:22 Speaker D: Personally, here are my beliefs. Speaker D: Having spent some time with both these cameras. Speaker D: If you are trying to create content for online consumption, whether it be YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, those sort of things, you are going to want a camera that is portable, a camera that boots up quickly, that sets up easily, and that you can just record with without a bunch of thought that goes into it.
1:48 Speaker H: First of all, let's talk about the things I love. Speaker H: So number one, this is a truly compact camera. Speaker H: You know, it's called the Pocket for a reason, because it really is pocket sized. Speaker H: It's very easy to slip into my pocket, into my backpack, into my purse. Speaker H: I just always have it with me. Speaker H: So whenever I feel the creative urge to film something, I can pull this camera out and start using it.
2:13 Speaker B: This thing is absolutely tiny, hence the name OSMO Pocket. Speaker B: However, I don't know whose pockets are actually big enough to fit this like that. Speaker B: That name's a little bit misleading. Speaker I: So this camera comes with a protective cover and once placed inside, you can simply just put it in your pocket. Speaker C: The first thing you'll notice about camera is its really nifty touch screen that also flips horizontally and vertically for creating content.
2:38 Speaker C: This is such a great option for both long form content and short form content for social media. Speaker C: A lot of people are looking for a camera that they can use for both vertical social media creation to create like YouTube shorts and Instagram Reels and TikToks. Speaker C: And they want to be able to use that camera for long form video recording as well. Speaker J: It's so easy, man. Speaker J: You rotate the screen to turn it on. Speaker J: You have a joystick to move the gimbal up, down, left, right. Speaker J: You press the gimbal three times so that you can film it in selfie mode.
3:04 Speaker J: 1, 2, 3, Press record. Speaker J: Just like that. Speaker J: See yourself as you're vlogging. Speaker F: But that compact design and moving gimbal come with a trade off. Speaker F: Durability. Speaker I: This brings me on to the biggest con of the Pocket 3, and that's its durability. Speaker I: This is a delicate little camera. Speaker I: It's fragile. Speaker I: There's no two ways around it. Speaker I: You've got that mechanical gimbal sitting on the top. Speaker H: Since I mentioned action cameras, I do want to bring up one con or thing that could be improved on this camera and that would be its water resistance.
3:34 Speaker H: Now, I understand this is not an action camera. Speaker H: If you need something that's super waterproof and rugged and tough, then obviously this is not your camera. Speaker H: You would want to look at something like an action camera. Speaker I: And if you drop it, unlike an action camera, where you might get away with a few scrapes and scratches, chances are you will damage or break the pocket 3. Speaker I: Over the past year, I've actually broken 2. Speaker I: I had one fall off a tripod damaging the screen, and the second one I dropped and chipped the camera lens, which is also not replaceable.
4:03 Speaker I: So if you do damage the camera lens, you. Speaker I: You need to replace the entire pocket three. Speaker F: Okay, so it's portable but fragile. Speaker F: How does the actual image quality hold up after extended use? Speaker I: The first Pro of the Pocket 3, which has to be its video and image quality, it's fantastic. Speaker I: I still can't quite believe you can get footage that looks this good from a camera this small. Speaker E: But it does get a little bit of flack for the actual image quality not being Very good.
4:31 Speaker E: However, that entire intro, except for the last shot, was actually filmed with the DJI Osmo Pocket 3. Speaker E: And actually, if you treat it like a proper camera, worry about your lighting composition, maybe even add some haze, you can get some pretty great images out of this little camera. Speaker G: Now it really sets this camera apart from other action cams out there. Speaker G: Isn't just the fact that it's an all in one setup with its flippy screen and its gimbal, but the fact that it has a 1 inch sensor. Speaker G: In a small camera like this, that makes a huge difference.
4:57 Speaker I: Something else that is impressive is the specs. Speaker I: You get a 1 inch sensor allowing you to capture up to 4K 60fps footage. Speaker I: Although there is a slow motion mode which bumps this up to 120fps at 4K. Speaker I: And you also get access to Dlog M, a color mode that produces flatter footage that preserves the highlights and shadows better so you get more flexibility when color grading the footage in post.
5:22 Speaker G: Another huge plus with this camera is the fact that it records in 10 bit. Speaker G: For all my color nerds out there, you know that 10 bit is a huge game changer when you're wanting to push colors without them falling apart. Speaker G: Now I've done a lot of color work over the years as a colorist and trust me, you can absolutely tell a difference. Speaker G: When somebody shoots in 10 bit versus 8 bit. Speaker F: You get options for how you want the color handled. Speaker K: Currently I'm shooting in the D log in profile.
5:48 Speaker K: Now, when this footage looks straight up out of camera, it does not look great. Speaker K: It looks very washed out. Speaker K: But you can manipulate the colors in post production to get something more custom for your videos. Speaker K: Let's switch over to the auto color profile, the natural profile in this camera. Speaker K: And here is the normal color profile of this camera. Speaker K: So this looks really good if you just want to film with your camera and don't do any tweaks in post.
6:13 Speaker K: However, I do feel like sometimes it's a little bit too sharp and I'm a filmmaker so I like to color grade my video. Speaker K: So I'm going to shoot in the D log in profile. Speaker J: As far as low light capabilities, the Pocket 3 isn't really the best. Speaker J: Like I don't really go beyond ISO 1600 with the pocket 3 because beyond that the footage does look a bit noisy. Speaker J: My face looks a little bit muddy and so yeah, for low light situations I don't really use the Pocket 3. Speaker F: To get most out of the sensor, especially outdoors.
6:40 Speaker F: Filters are key. Speaker G: Now the other accessory I highly recommend with this camera that is probably a no brainer is an ND filter. Speaker K: And one thing you'll need if you decide to shoot with a lower shutter speed is an ND filter. Speaker K: So I actually have this little ND filter I can put onto the action camera, dial in my exposure exactly how I see fit. Speaker K: And that allows you to get better image quality out of this tiny little camera.
7:05 Speaker F: Image quality seems solid, especially with some tweaks. Speaker F: But the real magic of the Pocket series is the gimbal. Speaker A: First off, we have the gimbal built in so I can get very stable walking shots like this. Speaker I: Now, the Pocket 3 also comes with a 3 axis mechanical gimbal, which will help keep your footage super smooth. Speaker I: Although I have noticed if you're somebody who walks a little bit heavier footed like myself, and you're holding the Pocket three out like this, you will often see some bobbing up and down in your footage.
7:33 Speaker I: Now this is fine if you're just using it for vloggin, but if you want that ultra smooth cinematic footage, you do need to pay a little bit more attention to how you're walking. Speaker E: Getting actually smooth handheld footage is honestly almost too easy. Speaker E: It's pretty much the hack I can walk around and you're not going to notice any of those terrible shakes that maybe you would notice on, let's say a mirrorless Sony camera. Speaker F: The gimbal enables some really useful features too.
7:58 Speaker A: So starting off we have spin shot, which is a 90 or 180 degree turn that the gimbal does automatically once you press the joystick. Speaker A: Now this is a really great feature if you want to get a creative shot that is really hard to do manually. Speaker A: So especially if you're just starting out and you want to try something different, this is a really cool thing to experiment with. Speaker F: Smooth video is great, but what about the sound? Speaker C: Now, when it comes to getting high quality audio, you do have a few options here. Speaker C: First would be the internal microphone, which is actually what you're hearing right now.
8:26 Speaker C: It's a very high quality internal microphone, which I love. Speaker C: You do have a couple of other. Speaker I: Options as well, although these do have two drawbacks. Speaker I: Firstly, there's no protection around them, there's no windshields. Speaker I: So if you are recording on a windier day, you will get some of that wind noise which will lower the audio quality. Speaker I: Second, you have to keep the Pocket three close to yourself. Speaker I: Once you start moving away further from it, it will no longer be able to pick up your voice.
8:52 Speaker F: That leads most people to use an external mic and DJI has made that incredibly easy. Speaker H: Final feature about the Pocket 3 and really all of DJI's current compact cameras that is making me really commit to the brand and not want to use any other brand right now is the DJI Mic 2 transmitter. Speaker H: So the DJI Mic 2, you know, you can get the transmitters, use them with the Bluetooth connection to small cameras like the Pocket 3. Speaker H: But what I really like is that when I'm using it, you know, Bluetooth like this, it's completely wireless.
9:21 Speaker H: I don't have to stick the receiver into the camera. Speaker J: It can connect up to two DJI Mic 2 transmitters. Speaker J: That is so cool. Speaker J: And if you get the bundle that includes the DJI Mic 2 transmitter with the Pocket 3, like when you fire both of them up, they'll connect instantly. Speaker J: It's that easy. Speaker D: The sound quality is there. Speaker D: These microphones are built to go with this, so you don't have to do a lot of research and trying to figure out.
9:48 Speaker D: It has 32 bit flow, which means that you can get loud and you can get soft and you don't have to worry about your audio being destroyed. Speaker G: I was actually really surprised that this recording not only 32 bit internal to the microphone, but it also records 32 bit internal to the Osmo. Speaker G: That's probably one of my favorite features with this thing. Speaker F: That seamless audio integration definitely adds to the overall ease of use. Speaker A: I think one of the main reasons though, why the Osmo Pocket 3 became so popular is because of how easy it is to use for both beginners and pros.
10:18 Speaker G: I needed something compact, yet capable. Speaker G: I felt like lugging around multiple cameras, tripods, batteries, lenses, filters and gimbals was just holding me back from spontaneously creating content. Speaker I: But the setup time involved with it is so much more. Speaker I: You've got the tripod, the camera, the monitor, the microphone transmitter. Speaker I: Whereas with the Pocket 3, all you have to do is take it out of your pocket, take off the COVID flip the screen to turn it on, hit record, and you're ready to go.
10:45 Speaker I: It's so fast. Speaker C: The menu and the user interface for the Pocket 3 feels really intuitive. Speaker C: And it's really easy to change your camera settings as well as playback your video files. Speaker C: And you can kind of scrub through your video clips to make sure your take was exactly how you wanted it to be. Speaker F: It even has features aimed squarely at solo creators. Speaker H: One other thing I love about the DJI Pocket 3 is glamour effects. Speaker H: And so this is something that might seem like it's not important, and maybe for some of you it isn't.
11:11 Speaker H: Some people don't like glamour effects where you can go in and you can, you know, enhance your makeup or you can smooth out your skin. Speaker H: And you know, that's something that I don't use all the time. Speaker H: And I understand if you don't want to use it all the time, but I like having that as an option because not many, many cameras out there, especially of this size, give you the opportunities to do that in post production. Speaker B: It also makes filming in public a lot less embarrassing.
11:37 Speaker B: It's still the bane of my existence and I hate filming in public. Speaker B: But because the camera is so small, it's a little bit more inconspicuous and you feel like people aren't staring at you as much. Speaker F: So after a year on the market with all its pros and cons considered, is the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 still the go to choice? Speaker E: Is the Osmo Pocket 3 a worthy camera for you guys in 2025 when you consider compared to like the iPhone 16 Pro or an actual proper camera?
12:04 Speaker E: Absolutely. Speaker E: And I'm definitely not the only one. Speaker E: There's a reason this camera is just so dang popular in the YouTube space. Speaker E: It's just a handy tool to have in your backpack. Speaker C: If I was going to go out and vlog today, I have a ton of options laying around the studio. Speaker C: We got action cameras, we got small point and shoots. Speaker C: We just got this camera actually that just came in the ZV E10 Mark 2. Speaker C: If I was going to go out and vlog today, the first camera that I would reach for would be the Pocket 3.
12:29 Speaker I: Like every camera, it's not perfect, but I have to say it's pretty darn close. Speaker I: It's kind of mind boggling. Speaker I: We are at a point where you can get such good quality from a small little pocket camera like this. Speaker I: And if 2025 is the year you want to start creating content, then honestly this is the ideal camera. Speaker F: But how does it really stack up against the common alternatives like a high end smartphone or a more traditional compact camera?
12:55 Speaker B: With all of that being said though, is it worth buying the DJI Osmo Pocket 3? Speaker B: My answer is no. Speaker B: And that's my answer if it's going to be your only camera. Speaker B: So as my secondary camera for content creation, it's one of my favorites by far. Speaker B: If it was my only camera though, I might feel like there were things that I was missing out on, like the ability to take high quality photos or swap lenses. Speaker B: And I get it. Speaker B: This is a very privileged perspective. Speaker D: So that's my recommendation.
13:21 Speaker D: I think the OSMO is the winner over the ZV E10 hands down when it comes to creation. Speaker D: No questions asked. Speaker D: Not even a thing. Speaker E: Well, honestly, if you Already own an iPhone 15 Pro, just buy the Osmo Pocket 3. Speaker E: I really don't think that there's enough new with the iPhone 16 Pro to justify them taking your money. Speaker E: However, if you own an iPhone 14 or earlier, it's definitely a tougher choice.
13:51 Speaker E: Personally, even though I love my Osmo Pocket 3, I think I would buy an iPhone capable of Apple Log. Speaker E: It's just too good. Speaker E: You also get the added benefit of having multiple lenses and it's a competent photography camera. Speaker E: Also, paired with the DJI OSMO Mobile, the iPhone becomes a much more effective content creation camera as well. Speaker G: I think this camera is for me as long as it stays what it should be, a quick and easy way to capture a variety of shots and angles in order to tell a story while still maintaining a fair amount of quality.
14:23 Speaker G: That allows me to focus on the project I'm working on rather than getting a perfect behind the scenes as a one man band. Speaker G: Sure it's not going to be the fanciest looking image, but it still looks pretty dang good. Speaker F: Alright, the consensus seems pretty clear. Speaker F: The DJI Osmo Pocket 3 remains an incredibly popular and capable camera over a year after its release. Speaker F: Its strengths are undeniable. Speaker F: Fantastic portability, surprisingly good image quality, especially when you treat it like a proper camera. Speaker F: Class leading stabilization thanks to the Kimbal and seamless integration with the DJI Mic system for great audio.
14:53 Speaker F: The ease of use, quick startup and features like Active Track make it a vlogging powerhouse. Speaker F: However, it's not perfect. Speaker F: Durability is a major concern, it's fragile, lacks water resistance and that gimbal needs protection. Speaker F: The fixed battery might be an issue for some, the autofocus can occasionally miss further subjects and the built in sharpness can be aggressive out of the box. Speaker F: Some users also wish for a built in storage and a native tripod mount.
