Speaker A: It is how I paid for my drink in the morning in a local cafe, or how I got my groceries in a grocery store here, or how you get your $1 pupusas in the evening, or even more so for locals to pay for utilities and rent. Speaker A: And it's changing almost everything with instant transfers, no need for card machines, much lower transaction fees and financial inclusions for those who are unbanked.
0:30 Speaker A: The ecosystem here started with foreign aid being provided to the El Sante community in Bitcoin, which then meant that El Zonte people started developing an ecosystem around it, which then inspired El Salvador to make history, becoming the first country in 2021 to adopt Bitcoin as its official currency in addition to US Dollars. Speaker A: And of course, there are challenges. Speaker A: Not everybody understands the new technology or how to handle digital wallets. Speaker A: Some locals still convert bitcoin to dollars, encountering additional fees.
