Speaker A: The Apple Watch is the best all around choice for most people, plus it's the most budget friendly option without the subscription. Speaker A: Whoop is unmatched if you're an athlete, serious about managing strain and recovery and really dislikes screens and also don't mind the higher ongoing subscription cost. Speaker A: The Oura Ring delivers detailed holistic insights, particularly excelling in sleep tracking.

Speaker A: But if you're curious about the detailed data from my 30 day test and how each performed in tracking sleep workouts, recovery and daily usage, let's dive in. Speaker A: Let's start with sleep tracking because it's foundational to everything else.
0:53 Speaker A: Across 30 nights of testing, all devices showed remarkable consistency in total sleep duration with only a few minutes variation. Speaker A: Specifically, Oura Ring reported an average of 7 hours and 31 minutes, WHOOP 7 hours and 27 minutes, Apple Watch 7 hours and 34 minutes and 8 sleep slightly longer at 7 hours and 47 minutes. Speaker A: However, the alignment quickly fell apart when it came to sleep stages. Speaker A: For example, average night REM sleep varied significantly.
1:19 Speaker A: Whoop reported just 17.7% of my sleep as REM sleep, while Apple watch recorded 21.2% or Oura ring 20.3% and eight sleep close to 20.9%. Speaker A: Seemingly the only odd one out here was Whoop as Apple, Oura and Eight Sleep were within 1% margin of error. Speaker A: Deep Sleep showed bigger gaps. Speaker A: Aura Whoop and Apple Watch closely matched here around 19%, while eight sleep consistently underreported at 13.5%.
1:45 Speaker A: They might have a different way of calculating it or just be inaccurate for deep sleep. Speaker A: All four devices showed agreement in one metric, respiratory rate matching within 1.4% every single night. Speaker A: This suggests respiratory rate might be the most trustworthy biometric across consumer wearables right now. Speaker A: Heart rate variability or hrv, one of the key metrics to track recovery, varied widely, up to 27% difference across devices.
2:10 Speaker A: Apple Watch hovers highest at 29.3 milliseconds followed by Whoop at 26.6, 8 sleep at 25.3 milliseconds and Oura ring, lowest at 23. Speaker A: These discrepancies are likely reflecting differences in the measurement timing and algorithms, and rather than hardware accuracy alone. Speaker A: Apple Watch measures HRE sporadically unless you turn off the regular rhythm notifications and enable afeeb history 8 Sleep and whoop seem quite close in HRV measurement, but Aura seem to always under report.
2:41 Speaker A: It is also true that in addition to the time of measurement, the placement also matters where Aura actually might have the best positioning, being the closest to the arteries on the finger for lowest heart rate measurement, Apple Watch and Oura Ring were consistently aligned within one beat per minute of each other and averaging around 52 beats per minute, closely matching the measurements. Speaker A: Whoop averaged slightly higher at around 55 beats per minute, while eight sleep was in between, but slightly less consistent for accuracy and lowest heart rate.
3:07 Speaker A: Apple Watch and Oura Ring stand out clearly. Speaker A: 8 Sleep, of course lacks critical metrics like skin temperature and blood oxygen, further limiting its use as a TTF sleep tracker. Speaker A: So overall, Apple Watch and Aura were the most consistent in alignment with majority of the trackers. Speaker A: Whoop had anomaly in REM and eight Sleep had anomaly in deep sleep. Speaker A: All however very consistent for total sleep time measurement within less than 1% deviation. Speaker A: Moving on to daily activity and recovery tracking, here's where the majority of the differences emerge.
3:35 Speaker A: Whoop sets itself apart with its strain metric. Speaker A: Unlike other trackers focusing on simple calorie counts, Whoop measures strain using your heart rate, zones, muscular load and crucially the recovery. Speaker A: For example, on days following poor sleep, Whoop recommended lower strain targets. Speaker A: The dynamic adjustment helped me really avoid overtraining consistently. Speaker A: The downside of Whoop promised features like blood pressure tracking require an additional medical grade monitor for calibration, which meant that I could never really use it.
4:04 Speaker A: Its ECG feature rarely worked, successful only once in a dozen of attempts compared to an Apple Watch. Speaker A: Flawless reliable ECG functionality every single time. Speaker A: Another downside is that Whoop was only able to recognize automatically the most basic types of workouts. Speaker A: It was getting most of the info from Apple Watch via Apple HealthKit integration. Speaker A: The other way around, Whoop's own automatic tracking ended up just showing up as other workout type within Apple Health.
4:30 Speaker A: So not very useful if you want to ensure your data is stored well in Apple HealthKit and easily usable and transferable to new devices in the future. Speaker A: Both Whoop and Aura also offer a biological age or health span metric or Aura calculated mine five years younger than my actual age while Whoop estimated around three years younger. Speaker A: While Aura mostly looks at the heart metrics Whoop also takes into account strain, sleep and recovery, which is more accurate. Speaker A: Both also offer AI powered coaching insights and explain their data or suggest improvements.
4:59 Speaker A: However, these features still feel superficial, interesting as an experiment and general direction, but not deeply integrated or actionable. Speaker A: Yet as they seem to be using the most basic AI models, I get significantly more useful feedback when I just copy and paste my data to ChatGPT to ask questions, for example. Speaker A: Apple Watch Alter 2, on the other hand, excels in continuous heart rate monitoring. Speaker A: Independent tests consistently rank Apple Watch as one of the most accurate wrist based trackers available only behind the chest straps.
5:27 Speaker A: Its strength is also extensive ecosystem specialized tracking for everything from skiing, surfing or even diving. Speaker A: Computers built as separate apps on the Apple Watch bringing you specific insights and metrics, something no other tracker on the list can fully match and as they don't have the developer platform, the processing power nor the sensors like Battometer and GPS to match. Speaker A: However, unlike whoop, Apple Watch does not adjust your daily goals based on your previous day recovery and strain.
5:53 Speaker A: Your goals are always static, potentially leading to misled opportunities to optimize rest and recovery. Speaker A: For that you need to connect your data with a third party app like Athletic, which very much inspired by Whoop, is trying to replicate the software experience using Apple Watch sensor data and it is close, but it does add another subscription. Speaker A: The Oura Ring excels with holistic tracking. Speaker A: Comfortably discreet for 24.7wear, it's ideally positioned in a finger to accurately measure key metrics like HRV and temperature.
6:21 Speaker A: I especially appreciate its integration with third party apps like Strava and Zero fasting app and Dexcom glucose monitoring, allowing you deeper insights into how your daily habits affect recovery and readiness without having to add manual tags to activities or or keeping a journal like in Whoop. Speaker A: However, after using every version of Oura Ring since the very first bulky model nearly 10 years ago, each version has suffered from battery issues and I've ended up with quite a few of them, each ring needing replacing within a year or two.
6:51 Speaker A: With batteries degrading from the promised seven days to just one or two days, it also slips easily and gets in the way during heavy workouts or water sports, making it less ideal for intense physical activities where I take it off and rely on just Whoop or Apple Watch. Speaker A: Let's talk about everyday use, battery life, comfort and screens. Speaker A: Apple Watch clearly wins in versatility with its high quality display and broad ecosystem. Speaker A: In addition to health and fitness, you can stream and download music on Spotify, take calls on your AirPods, open doors with keys pay with Apple Pay and have access to a rich ecosystem of apps.
7:25 Speaker A: However, battery life is a clear trade off requiring charging almost every day. Speaker A: Whoop has the best battery life lasting nearly two weeks, ideal for constant monitoring without frequent charging, but it lacks screen altogether which is a benefit for many who want to minimize screen use. Speaker A: However, the device feels plastic and cheap and not something I'd have on my wrist constantly. Speaker A: It has somewhat become a desirable brand in the fitness space, so certainly building more of a community feel when you see others wearing one.
